2nd X1  v  Wem   21st  April 2014     -      Steve Cansdale Reports

Madeley Seconds made their return to the top flight with a tough Away fixture to Wem.

On a sunny, showery, blustery day, Wem won the toss and put Madeley in to bat. This seemed to be a wise decision by the Wem Captain, as the wickets of newbie, Chris Birkett and old stalwart, Micky Roberts fell at the total on only 4.

Lucas Bladen and Jamie Lloyd along with returnee Mark Mason, tried to steady the ship, but Lucas and Mark were soon on their way back to the pavvy with the score at 27-4.

Worse was to come as Jamie Lloyd, and Vice-Captain, Simon Woodcock both fell to one of the numerous LBW decisions, leaving the seconds struggling at 43-6.

Both renowned big hitters Pete Sanders and Daniel Bowdler came onto the scene, and quickly made their intentions known as Pete knocked up a fine 38, before coming another LBW decision victim, and Daniel a hard hitting 35, before
being c & b.

At the score of 103-8, things were looking a bit more respectfull, as Skipper Loll Woodhall came in with Lewis Davies toadd a quickly scored 24 runs. Unfortunately, Lewis missed timed a shot and was caught.

It was obvious what Loll Woodhall intended, it was to get the 125 for a bonus point and they just made it, with Loll at 8 not out, and Callum Rigby Bowled for 0
Innings Total 129 - 10 from 48.3 overs

Wem began their Innings looking pretty confident that they were going to quickly knock off the runs. But they had a shock in store, as the opening bowling Duo of Lewis Davies (must have been bowling both ends! Ed) bowled superbly.

Opener Jack Davies was soon on his way back to the pavvy as Chris Birkett took a steady catch from Lewis Davies 's rapid bowling.

Two more Wem wickets were to fall at the score of 17, when C.Barrow and D.Powell both fell to LBW decisions from Lewis Davies. Wem collapsed to 27-5 with Jamie Lloyd joined the destruction, with only S.Chandler 17 and T.Mullholland putting up any resistance.

Jamie Lloyd showed that he has still got it by bowling both S.Astley and Jason Davies . This left Wem on 46-6. Loll Woodhall bought himself on and quickly dismissed three Batsmen for a loss of only two runs (Watch out Princey and Oddy) giving him figures of 4ov 2md 2runs 3wkts. Opening Bowler Lewis Davies returned to take the final wicket of S.Raine to finish the job of Wem 64 - 10 from 31 overs.

All in  all a very successful day, with Batsmen Pete Sanders and Daniel Bowdler pulling us out of the mire. And Bowlers Lewis Davies 26 - 5 from 12 overs, Loll Woodhall 2 - 3 from overs and Jamie Lloyd 2 - 22 from 9 overs destroying Wem.

A final note, Daniel Bowdler is off to join the Army today. We at Madeley Cricket Club wish him well and look forward to seeing him later in the season on his home leave.
