2nd X1  v  Ludlow   10th May 2014     -      Steve Cansdale Reports

The seconds at Home for the second week on the trot, came up against a very strong Ludlow side, who are currently top of the Division.
Due to some very heavy downpours, the match started 30 minutes late

With the weather in mind, skipper Loll Woodhall won the toss and opted to bowl.
Injuries and non-availabilities restricted the Madeley Bowling attack, leaving Jamie Lloyd and Loll Woodhall to open the bowling.
The Ludlow opening pair of Glen Whittaker and skipper Matthew Hawes made their intentions known, with a quick fire couple of overs before Matthew Hawes was deemed to be LBW off of Jamie Lloyd.
Robert Taylor then joined in the fast scoring opening overs, before Glen Whittaker was caught easily by Guy Sheldon off of Jamie Lloyd.
This slowed Ludlow down a bit , just in time for Liam Kearsley to have Robin Taylor caught beautifully in the slips by Mark Mason, and Loll Woodhall bowling top scorer Stephen Burgoyne (77).
Mark Mason took over from Loll Woodhall bowling uphill to some very tight bowling, even though Mark didn't take a wicket, he managed to slow the Ludlow batsmen down.
Matthew Nutting and Dan Kearsley came into the attack, but were hard pressed to get wickets against a very strong middle order.
At 181-5, it looked like Madeley were going to keep their opponents to a reasonable score. But a flurry of runs from Daniel Hillman (44), Jamie Smith (18) and Chris Ammonds (28no) enabled Ludlow to the score of 260-7 from their 50 overs.
J.Lloyd 7-2-2-24  L.Woodhall 13-1-1-62   L.Kearsley 4-0-1-34  D.Kearsley 11-0-2-61  M.Mason 8-0-0-34  M.Nutting 7-0-1-32

With a long haul in front of them, the seconds started their Innings with openers Liam Kearsley and Chris Birkett. Unfortunately, Liam fell foul of the old swingshot which was nicked to slips for a Golden Duck.
Chris was next to go LBW, even though the Bat Pad was clearly heard.
Lucas Bladen and Jamie Lloyd  settled the side down a bit, with a very inspirational knock of 25 from Lucas before he was caught by Daniel Hillman behind, leaving the score at 54-3.
Mick Roberts was next to join Jamie, and hopes were on a partnership seen the previous week. But this was not to be as Mick was soon walking back to the Pavvy for 0, the score now 55-4.
Jamie was next to go after being caught for a very steady 16. A very calming Innings leaving it now to Mark Mason and Lee Standell.
These two aggressive batsmen started to knock the leather around, with Lee making a quick exit after knocking up 8.  Mark showing some of his old quality, but was caught after scoring 25,  by what even he himself described as "A dreadfull Shot".
Newbie too the seconds, Guy Sheldon and regular Dan Kearsley quickly came and went, leaving the final 12 overs to Loll Woodhall and Matt Nutting .
These two settled themselves in, and batted exceptionally well, with Ludlow throwing all of their main attack at them.
A draw looked on the cards, when unfortunately with the first ball of the last over, Matt was Yorked.
Final Score 106-10
So near and yet so far, but further experience for the seconds will no doubt transform into another win soon.
