1st X1  v  Wem      2nd May 2009     -      John Fawcett Reports

On Saturday Wem made the trip to Park Street looking to continue their good start to the season. Skipper Jamie lloyd win the toss and decided to bowl.

On a fair track with a little seam movement our opening bowlers got off to a great start. Craig McLean carried on his superb start for MCC with a superb spell (8-25-2) and was supported brilliantly by Kieron Richards (7-33-1). Both bowlers showed good control of line and length and were giving the opposition batsmen plenty of problems. After Madeley had taken 2 wickets the Wem's danger man and skipper Martin Davies strode to the crease. He single-handedly took Wem to 60-3 at over 3.5 an over. As boundaries started to flow 'big hitting' Davies was dropped at cover and it looked as though Madeley would be made to pay the price.

The Wem innings turned for the worse when Madeley brought on 2nd team skipper Chris Hodson. Chris bowled one of the best spells in Madeley first teams recent history and ended with figures of 12.2overs, 9 runs for 5 wickets which included a miserly 9 maidens. He had Davies stumped for 38. Wem ended their innings on 108.

Madeley knew they would still have to bat well against the tight bowling of Raine and others. After losing Richard Firmstone early on for 3, Dan McLean and Steve Jones took Madeley to victory with a mixture of good stroke play and patient batting. Wem put down a couple of chances nearer the end of the innings but by then Madeley were virtually home and dry.

Saturday saw a great performance in the field, with the bat and ball. Obviously Chris steals the limelight with his outstanding figures but a big congratulations must go out to our temporary wicket keeper Andy Lloyd who looked a natural behind the sticks.

This game gave Madeley their first win of the season and gave the watching support cause to be optimistic about the season ahead. With the likes of Jonty lloyd and last seasons league highest run scorer Steve Pugh still to return, competition for places will be intense over the coming weeks.

Man of the Match: Chris Hodson

Next for Madeley is a trip to Bomere Heath.
