1st X1  v  Newtown    20th June 2009     -      John Fawcett Reports

Absolutely abysmal. Madeley's performance on Saturday was one of the worst witnessed in recent years. In the main 3 areas of the game Madeley were found woefully short against the bottom team in the Marston Shropshire Premier league. Batting first Madeley's top order mostly gave away their wickets to the bowling of Davies. While the bowler may have bowled a consistent line and length, Lloyd, Jones and Fawcett all threw their wickets away with at best, questionable shots. Where last week the lower middle order collapsed it was the supposed better batsmen at the top who disappointed this week.

Chris Hodson dug in well and put 35 on the board. He is the only batsmen who can say he performed at somewhere near his best. Madeley’s batting in recent weeks has been shocking and this weekend put the icing on the cake. The team posted a meagre 111 in the 50 overs.

Madeley's bowlers usually come to the rescue but this was not to be the case against Newtown. The bowling of McLean, Lloyd, Pugh and Richards was hit to all parts of the ground. Not one of the bowlers could find a decent line and length and the Newtown batsmen ‘filled their boots’. Newtown’s batting line up regularly fail to make 100 but in truth it looked like they could have knocked off 250 the way Madeley bowled. Madeleys poor performance was not just limited to the bowling and batting. On the three occasions Newtown batsmen gave a chance to a Madeley fielder they duly put it down. Regular followers of the Madeley first team would not be surprised to see catches go down, indeed just the 3 going down in an innings could be regarded as one of their better catching displays!

Madeley's performance must pick up next week as they make the short trip to Much Wenlock. Madeley's ability to play spin bowling will be tested by Wenlock's oversees professional Kuldeep Diwan who has bamboozled many a batsmen already this season. From Saturdays performance things can only get better for Madeley…. Surely!?

Man of the Match : Chris Hodson – without his bowling and batting the Madeley scorecard could have gone from embarrassing to horrific.
