1st X1 v Oswestry 3rd June
On a glorious day Loll lost the toss and Madeley found
themselves in the field
Due to unavailability there was a chance for the youngsters to stake their
claim to a first team place.
Sam Hathaway and Liam Pettit, back from Uni opened the bowling. Due to his
age Sam was restricted to 6 overs and finished with a tidy spell of 0 - 27.
Liam struck in his second over when the opener edged one to Rico's safe hands
at slip. Liam then switched ends and quickly got a second wicket.
The score was 41-2. Not a bad start

Oswestry's next pair then set to work resulting in the best partnership of
the day. Despite several LBW appeals they put on 86 for the 3rd wicket. Finally
john Cadwallader fell LBW to give Rico his first League wicket.
Loll then got in on the act when he had S.Humphreys amazingly caught on the
long on boundary by Jason Willets. From a spectator's view it looked unlikely
that the catch would be taken but somehow Jason stuck his left hand out behind
him and virtually without looking took the catch one handed.
Another fine running catch by Rico followed and further wickets fell to leave
the score at 149 -7 after 44 overs but then the tail wagged to enable Oswestry
to reach 191 - 7.
The skipper's 'pace' or lack of it caused the batsman problems and Umpire Mr
Kynaston decided that he had to call Loll for bowling beamers. Off the first, the
batsman smashed the ball 60 yards to the square leg boundary where Rico took the
catch but to no avail. It's hard to understand some decisions as it's unlikely
that in either case the ball would have reached the stumps without bouncing
like Hoddy's in pain)
Madeley's reply got off to a disastrous start.
The second ball rapped Rico on his pads and although he was standing a couple
of feet outside his crease and it was right arm over to a left handed bat, it
made no difference to the umpire who sent him on his way.
arrived at the crease and promptly got off the mark first ball.
Steve Pugh then smashed his first ball from the Aussie through the covers for
4 but then the very next ball was hit on the knee roll of the pads and the
finger went up again. 6 - 2 and still one ball of the first over to go.
(Jason loses his wicket)
The next victim was Andy Pugh who was hit high on the pads standing on the
crease, the ball wouldn't have hit the stumps if they had been 4 feet high.
11 -3 but Verbal was having a good day. He hit the Aussie for 2 4's and a 6
in the same over which saw the Oswestry skipper telling him (The Aussie, not
verbal!) to take a breather.
The score had reached 51 when we lost Chris Hodson to another LBW decision.
At this stage there had been 4 appeals and 4 wickets
With the score on 66 Verbal's fine innings came to an end when he edged a
drive to slip.
This left Farrah and Jason Willets together and they both played well. Jason
survived an LBW appeal which came as a surprise but after they were out the end
came soon and we were all out for 133.
A disappointing day but it's hard to recover from losing the top order so
And finally thanks to the supporters club for making the trip.
