1st X1  v  Newtown  26th Aug 2006

For the majority of the 45 over game it looked like Madeley would come out on top but it all changed when Mike Bellamore strode to the wicket and decided to smash anything that came in his way.

Earlier in the day Loll lost the toss and we were invited to bat. A good opening partnership followed with "The Kid" Maden the main run getter. The score continued to grow and at 123- 2 off 30 overs we were in a strong position and should have been looking for a score over 200. Six an over off the last 15 with 8 wickets in hand should be a reasonable target.

However once again we couldn't push on. Rico was out in the 31st over and things slid downhill, the last 14 overs only producing 40 runs. We ended on 172 - 9 which probably left the game evenly poised.

When Newtown batted Madeley were well on top keeping the score down and in a purple patch for us  Newtown went from 34 - 0 to 49 - 5 with 23 overs gone. Things were looking good and if we could have removed Mike Bellamore early on we would surely have won the match or at least had a winning draw.

But after playing himself in the ball started finding it's way to the boundary, sometimes seeming to defy the laws of gravity as it cleared the ropes by a long long way.

From 66 - 5 off 26 overs Newtown raced to victory, 107 runs being scored in just over 14 overs thanks mainly to Mike Bellamore who finished on 70 not out.

Looking at it objectively over the season,  the last 10 - 15 overs of each innings seem to be the deciding factor in the outcome of most games. If we can put this right then good results will follow.
