1st X1 v Perkins 6th May
The game at Park Street saw Madeley trying to avenge last years thrashing.
Things didn't start too well as after losing the toss and being inserted, a couple
of early wickets fell, 45 - 2 with "Verbal" and "Hoddy" back in the pavvy.
Worse was to follow with Steve Pugh unfortunatley given out caught off his
backside 67 - 3. The Perkins opening bowlers were keeping the game tight,
bowling a good length and moving the ball about a little.
However changes in the rules this year allow a maximum of 16 overs per bowler
and Perkins skipper decided to bowl his openers out. In his closing 2 overs
Shane Gwilt got rid of Pete Smith LBW and "Boss" bowled for a good 41. Madeley
had been reduced to 88 - 5 but the opening bowlers were finished.
John Fawcett then drove the ball straight to mid off and set off for a quick
single. Unfortunately "Farrah's" great long legs weren't long enough and he got run
out with a direct hit 101 - 6.
(Damian playing a sweet late cut)
This left Andy Pugh and Damian Carvalho with some repair work to do.This they set about with gusto. Taking the attack to the bowlers the ball
started finding it's way to the boundary on a regular basis, sometimes only
seeing the boundary when it was passing, on it's way down.
Seventy odd balls later and after a partnership of 103 "Spikey/Grumpy" took
one on the pads and was on his way back for a fine 47 (5 fours, 2 sixes) 204 -
then completed his 50 before the rush of blood, which inexplicably had been
delayed for quite a while, suddenly reared it's head and went straight to his
(Andy Pugh clearing the boundary)
This resulted in him taking a familiar position, a few feet or so outside
of his crease having missed the ball.
After collecting the ball and having time
for a cup of tea the keeper decided to remove the bails leaving Damo to return
Nevertheless it was a good knock (7 fours, 1 six) and a much needed one 207-8.
Let the fun begin.
In strode Terry Owen to join the skip with an over and a
couple of balls to go. Having put the camera away with the last over about to
commence it had to quickly re-emerge.
First ball went straight for 4. Second ball had the same result. So did the
third. Thankfully the camera was out and ready as another 6,4 and a final 2 (the
ball being retrieved just inside the boundary) followed.
(Terry after his whirlwind 26)
The skipper finished undefeated on a masterful 2 and the innings closed on
234 - 7.
Perkins innings followed a similar pattern. Mal Serplett who seemed to be in
good form found his way to 25 before he skied a delivery from Damian. Everyone
held their breath as Sam Norman got underneath it. Thankfully he held on and the
score was 30 - 3.
Wickets continued to fall with all bowlers chipping in and John Fawcett and
Loll Woodhall taking good catches.
However from 90 - 5 Perkins had a couple of good partnerships. John Wigley
batted well for an undefeated 84 and found some good support to take the score
to 203 -7.
The game ended in a winning draw for Madeley a much better result than last
(Mal Serplett clips to leg)
